Golf Holidays In King Island
King Island has become one of Australia’s true bucket-list golf destinations. Located in Bass Strait between Tasmania and mainland Australia, the island offers a raw, spectacular style of coastal golf that feels completely different from a conventional resort golf holiday.
Golfers travel to King Island for dramatic ocean views, natural links terrain, wind, firm playing surfaces and internationally recognised courses including Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes. The landscape is a major part of the experience, with golf holes shaped by dunes, coastline and the island’s famously exposed conditions.
A King Island trip is less about nightlife and large resorts and more about great golf, great food and getting away from everything. That is precisely why so many golfers love it.
King Island is famous for its produce, particularly cheese, beef and seafood, including its highly regarded crayfish. Between rounds, visitors can explore secluded beaches, rugged coastline, walking trails, lighthouses and small island communities.
Cape Wickham Lighthouse and the island’s coastal scenery are highlights, but much of King Island’s appeal comes from its simplicity. Play golf, enjoy local food, have a drink with your group and wake up the next morning to do it again.
It makes an exceptional addition to a broader Tasmanian golf itinerary and can also work beautifully as a dedicated short golf escape.
King Island’s location in Bass Strait means weather plays an important role in the golf experience. Conditions are maritime and can change quickly, with wind being a genuine feature of playing golf on the island.
Summer offers longer daylight hours and generally milder temperatures, making it a popular period for golf trips. Spring and autumn can also provide excellent golf, although golfers should always arrive prepared for wind, cooler temperatures and occasional rain.
Rather than detracting from the experience, the changing conditions are part of what makes King Island golf so memorable. The same hole can play completely differently depending on the direction and strength of the wind.
